The 7th IEEE Global Conference on Consumer Electronics (GCCE 2018) was held in Nara, Japan.
The Laboratory of Electronics and Internet of Things, Southern Taiwan University of Science
and Technology, led by Prof. Wan-Rong Chang and his research and development team—Liang-
Wei Chen, Jian-Ping Su, and Yu-Jin Guo—won first prize in IEEE GCCE Excellent Demo Award
with their “An Intelligent Scalp Inspection and Diagnosis System for Caring Hairy Scalp
Health.”

The seminar is one of the major conferences hosted by the American Institute of Electrical
and Electronics Engineers each year; it is also the annual sister conference of the
International Conference of Consumer Electronics (ICCE) in Las Vegas, USA. To demonstrate
the energy of research and development in consumer electronics, the 2018 GCCE workshop
brings together leading technologists from the consumer electronics industry and academia
to present the latest research on systems, circuits, technologies, processes and
applications.

This year the annual seminar received more than 400 academic paper submissions from 19
countries before it finally selected 11 outstanding papers to present research results. In
addition to the academic units, the accepted papers also include researchers, system
developers, and service providers. By sharing the ideas, designs, and R&D experience of
emerging technologies in consumer electronics, the research team of Southern Taiwan
University of Science and Technology outdistanced other excellent papers.

Prof. Wan-Rong Chang said that the award-winning paper of the team brought forth the
world's only scalp detection instrument and system that can automatically identify the skin
quality of the head to assist the domestic beauty salons by providing them with scalp
detection and physiotherapy services. This can also reduce the costs of education and
training and enhance consumers’ satisfaction and trust. The overall system e includes
three parts: scalp image detection instrument, Android mobile tablet APP, and online
information management platform. The scalp movie detection instrument uses WiFi to transmit
the scalp image (200 times larger) taken to the Android mobile lithography. The
lithographic action app can automatically identify the skin quality and the status of the
received image (including bacteria or allergies, dandruff, excess oil, hair loss,
folliculitis, etc.) by AI deep learning, thereby reducing the error caused by human
interpretation and improving the trust of the subject with objective data. In addition,
through the 3G/4G network, the APP can upload the results of each scalp test to the online
information management platform, so that the beauty salon that provides scalp physiotherapy
can keep track of the efficacy on consumers and manage their membership.
【Jian-Ping Su, a student in the doctoral program at STUTS, showed
and explained the situation of the research and development results of their paper to the
participating scholars.】
As President Deng-Maw Lu of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology said,
participating in the international competition, in addition to encouraging teachers and
students to invest in creation and improving research and development, can be combined with
the resources and achievements of the school's cross-scholar exchanges and cooperation over
the years. The benefits of communication can also be used to establish cooperation with
other international research units or industries. The research work of this R&D team was
greatly favored by the conference, which once again proves that Southern Taiwan University
of Science and Technology has the ability to cultivate international talents and will
continue to go toward the goal of becoming one of the first-class universities.
