South Taiwan University of Science and Technology won the gold medal and social impact award in the 2019 Malaysia Novel Research and Innovation Competition.

The 2019 Novel Research and Innovation Competition, an annual event hosted by the Malaysian University of Science, attracted outstanding teams from Asian universities and colleges to compete for the highest honor. Under the guidance of Prof. Jin-Bo Shi, the team of representatives from the Department of Electronic Engineering, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology—including students from the Philippines and Taiwan—won the Gold Medal Award and the Social Impact Award, plus RM 2,000 dollars (NT$15,000).

This year's NRIC organizers focused on the theme of sustainable development and emphasized the importance of innovation that can improve the world today without jeopardizing future generations. 58 teams from different countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Taiwan, participated in the competition, covering engineering, social transformation, creative arts, life sciences, information technology and communications, medicine and health sciences, and basic science. NRIC began in 2007 and has entered the 12th year. Every year, the competition sees new breakthrough in research.

The project of the South Taiwan University of Science and Technology team was called "Remote 3D Ultrasound Prenatal Imaging System," which combines image processing and TV white space (TVWS) technology to help patients who are far away. Before participating in the 2019 NRIC competition, Aaron Raymond See and Yuqun Ms. Du led the team to work with the medical department in the Philippines. In March 2019, in Palawan, Palawan, Philippines. The first field test was conducted at Puerto Princesa Palawan, which successfully set up a telemedicine system from the township clinic to the city hospital.

In the competition, 9 teams won gold medals, 17 teams won silver medals, and 19 teams won bronze medals. Among the winners, only five teams were given special awards, including "Best Moderator", "Social Impact", "Creativity", "Innovation" and "Best NRIC". This is an amazing achievement for university students. The team is looking forward to sharing practical experience with South Taiwan University students to attract more students to participate in international competitions.
