In this competition, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology performed very well. It won the gold medals of two categories—Merck Special Award and Best Popularity Award—becoming the biggest winner of this Lite-On Innovation Award. Jian-Ping Su, directed by Prof. Wan-Rong Chang from the Department of Electronic Engineering, and Jia-Yi Huang and Yu-Kuan Mo, directed by Prof. Kun Ouyang from the Department of Creative Product Design, won the gold medal of Technological Innovation Group with their work "Artificial Intelligence-Based Voice Assistant System for the Voiceless." This work is based on cooperation with Dr. Shu-Wei Tsai from the Department of Otolaryngology, National Cheng Kung University Hospital, with the original intention to restore the voice of the voiceless patient and release their hands, solving the shortcomings of traditional polyphonic equipment by a wearable sounding device and voice recognition app. This system uses homemade special resonance waves to penetrate into the human body cavity to generate mechanical voice, and then use the voice recognition app to translate it into text and display it on the app with artificial intelligence technology, thereby communicating with people without any hand held device and releasing the hands of the voiceless patient.

Prof. Kun Ouyang from the Department of Creative Product Design and Prof. Wan-Rong Chang from the Department of Electronic Engineering jointly instructed students Suan-Yan Li and Wei-Ming Gao, winning the Gold Medal of Design Innovation Group with their work "HanDo Child Life Assistant Prosthetics." This work is a modularized prosthetic designed for children with unilateral limbs that is both economical and flexible. It can be converted into a kit for study, sports, entertainment and life. In addition, "HanDo Children's Life Assistant Prosthesis" also won the best popularity award in this competition. In the other group, Prof. Wan-Rong Chang of the Department of Electronic Engineering instructed students Yuan-Long Li, Yu-Lun Tu, and Jia-Hao Chen, and Prof. Kun Ouyang of the Department of Innovative Product Design instructed students Jia-Ying Chou, Jia-Yi Huang, and Shuan Lin with their work "Bed-off Warning and Bedside Fall Based on Deep Learning Edge Computing Technology.” The "Notification System" identifies and reports the situation that hospital patients may fall when they leave the bed, which won the Merck Special Award as a result.
