The Department of Mechanical Engineering of STUST recently held the 2024 Second National College Wind Cup-Green Power Innovation Creative Net-Zero Implementation Competition, continuing the Ministry of Education’s new engineering plan, implementing SDGs sustainable development with a sense of purpose, smart manufacturing, future talent cultivation project. Students from colleges and universities across the country were invited to participate in the development and implementation of net-zero ideas. For the first time, briefings and creative explanations were conducted at the Taiwan Technology Innovation Base (TTA), and they continued to conduct a practical test competition in the Wind and Rain Wind Tunnel Lab at the Institute of Architecture of the Ministry of the Interior. This competition was jointly promoted by Professor Yi-ju Hsu of the department and You-ren Chen, Director of Innovation Incubation Center, STUST. This year, in addition to maintaining the creative design of the blades, a new system design group was added. The participating teams also needed to integrate the entire system module and compatibility. The competition aimed to cultivate talents in the field of green electricity, hoping to plant the seeds of growth for Taiwan's goal of net-zero carbon emissions in 2050 through budding and cultivation.

This competition invited General Manager Chang-zhi Shih of Widmann Wind Power Co., Ltd., General Manager Tai-wei Chen of Torque Technology Co., Ltd., General Manager Shi-shiong Chen of Ebao Technology Co., Ltd., General Manager Yu-lan Zhan of Jitech International Co., Ltd., and Engineer Yu-ming Ke from ITRI Green Industry Research Center to serve as briefing reviewers, giving comments and suggestions to the students from an industrial perspective, so that the participating students' vision could be broader and their design more thorough. In addition, this competition had received strong assistance and support from the industry, including the Smart Wind Energy Development Association, Junfan Industrial Co., Ltd., Jiayun Heavy Machinery Engineering Co., Ltd., Torque Technology Co., Ltd., Jingying Co., Ltd., Fengxing Noodles, and Ke Sheng Technology Co., Ltd., offering special sponsoring, entry bonuses, and gift certificates. Although this competition was held for the second time, through competition training and training, students would be able to effectively solve and implement creative ideas for various future trends and challenges, fully demonstrating the cooperation between industry, government, academia and research, and promoting teaching practice concepts and design implementation.

This competition attracted students from different institutions across the country to participate. Yang, a student from the National Taipei University of Technology, said that because he is a student studying in the higher vocational system, he can use the experience accumulated from higher vocational education to university in the development of this wind turbine. Although the production process was not difficult, the theory and simulation were a little more challenging. He said that his team learned more knowledge in different fields through this activity. STUST Shih and his team said that this competition challenged vertical axis blades. They encountered many difficulties and problems during the design process, especially the angle of attack design of the blades. They learned a lot, and the actual measurement location of the competition was in a professional large-scale. As the competition was held in a wind tunnel, seeing the works of students from other schools also opened their eyes. Lin, who is also a student at STUST, and his team said that since this was the second year of the competition, looking back on the experience of the first competition, they could not only correctly identify the blades, but also skillfully analyzed the impact of their design on power generation efficiency.

Professor Ru-li Lin, Chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, STUST, pointed out that the second Green Electricity Creative Net-Zero Implementation Competition was not only a competition, but also a continuation of in-depth investment in future engineering talents. He was very happy to see students from different schools participating in this competition. Through the lively exchanges between students from various schools during the competition, these young engineers could apply their knowledge in real environments and continued to contribute to sustainable energy, digital integration, and renewable energy development. They would become an important driver of future green electricity energy creation and carbon reduction development.

Dean Ming-tsun Tsai of the College of Engineering, STUST, said that STUST has obtained the Smart Microgrid Industry Talent and Technology Training Base from the Ministry of Education’s. Sustainable energy and net-zero goals have become world trends. How can we assist the industry in green energy sustainability and net-zero carbon reduction? The cultivation of professional talents is very important. STUST has invested a lot of software and hardware resources to assist the cultivation and construction of green energy talents in Taiwan. We are also particularly grateful for the strong support from the industry, government and research circles. We hope to promote mutual exchanges, share experiences, and develop innovation together through the competition. Educational implementation methods pave the way for future development contributions in the fields of green power generation, carbon reduction, smart digital integration, and energy conservation.
