1. Name of Competition: Readers Theater Competition
2. The Purpose of the Competition:
The purpose of this competition is to promote students’ English ability. As well as helping students to improve their English reading and spoken English proficiency, the competition helps students to develop their experience of teamwork, and also introduces a popular teaching technique in English Language Teaching.
3. Organizer: Department of Applied English
4. Participants: The freshman students of Applied English Department. Each speaking class of the first year students is required to enter at least two teams.
5. Time and Place: 14:00-16:00, 25th of May at T0110
6. Definition of Reader Theater:
Readers Theater is an oral form of spoken theater, with two or more people reading aloud from a script , and using vocal expression to convey the story . Readers Theatre is a style of theater in which the actors may or may not memorize their lines. In Readers Theatre, actors use vocal expression to help the audience understand the story, rather than visual storytelling using props and costumes. Like storytelling, Readers Theater can create images by suggestion that could never be realistically portrayed on stage. However, you are free to use simple props and actions to help the telling of the story.
7. Registration: Please fill in and hand the registration form to the AED office. The registration form can be downloaded from the AED website. Registration deadline is 22th of May .
8. Procedure:
(1) Readers Theater will be performed by groups. Participants should use their own choice of story, and then create their own original adaptation. Participants also have to hand in the final script a week before the competition.
(2) Each performance should be between 4 and 7 minutes long. 2 points will be deducted for every 30 seconds over 7 minutes or under 4 minutes.
(3) Each group is required to arrive 20 minutes before the competition start; the starting order is determined by the drawing of lots on the day of the competition.
(4) Notification:
1) Each team can choose whether to prepare sets and costumes. However, these will not be included in the scoring scheme.
2) The organizer will set up chairs beside the stage, for the use of the performing groups, to be arranged by the performers.
3) The organizer will only provide microphones and music stands.
9. Judges: Teachers from the Applied English Department.
10. Judging Criteria:Script and Plot 20%, Pronunciation 20%, intonation 20%, expression 20%, Group Performance 20%, total 100%.
11. Reward:The first three groups will have prizes and certificates.
The First: $2,000
The Second:$1,500
The Third: $1,000
