The Ministry of Health and Welfare recently announced a recent imported case of measles involving a foreign student at a university. The student arrived in Taiwan at the end of March this year (2026) to study and developed suspected symptoms in early April, subsequently being diagnosed with the disease. A total of 162 contacts were identified on campus and at hospitals.

Because measles is highly contagious, most university students in Taiwan last received the MMR vaccine approximately 15 years ago, and research has shown that the immunity generated by the MMR vaccine declines over time. University students have frequent and close social interactions. To reduce the risk of cluster infections on campus, individuals are reminded to take the following preventative measures:

(I) Practice good personal hygiene: Wash hands frequently, avoid touching the mouth and nose, practice cough etiquette, and wear a mask when appropriate. (II) Strengthen Health Monitoring: If you are entering from an epidemic area and develop symptoms such as fever, rash, rhinitis, cough, or conjunctivitis (similar to measles) within 3 weeks of arrival, you should stay home from work and school, seek medical attention as soon as possible, wear a mask at all times, and proactively inform your doctor of your travel history.

(III) Take Protective Measures: Those planning to travel to epidemic areas, and who were born in 1966 or later, can visit a domestic "travel medicine clinic" 2-4 weeks before departure for an assessment and self-funded MMR vaccine administration. During your trip, you should also pay attention to personal hygiene to reduce the risk of infection.
