Due to a recent outbreak of dengue fever among Taiwanese tour groups participating in overseas medical missions, some of whom were university students and faculty, the Ministry of Health and Welfare has issued a reminder that overseas medical missions and volunteer services require extended periods outdoors, and accommodations may lack adequate mosquito repellent, increasing the risk of mosquito-borne disease infection.
Those planning to travel to dengue-endemic areas are advised to implement the following preventative measures:
1. Use government-approved mosquito repellents: containing DEET, Picaridin, or IR3535, sprayed on exposed skin.
2. Choose accommodations with mosquito repellent: select accommodations with screens on windows and doors, air conditioning, or mosquito nets to reduce the chance of mosquito bites.
3. Monitor health during the trip: please pay attention to the health of tour members. If any suspected dengue fever symptoms such as fever, headache, retro-orbital pain, muscle pain, joint pain, bone pain, or rash appear, please seek medical attention immediately. IV. Upon arrival in Taiwan: If you experience any suspected symptoms, please seek medical attention or notify the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) quarantine personnel. After returning to Taiwan, please conduct 14 days of self-health monitoring. When seeking medical attention, you must proactively inform the medical staff of your TOCC (Travel History, Occupation, Contact History, and Cluster History).
