in the Creative Park" concert in the Cultural and Creative Industrial Park

Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology won the approval of the Ministry of Education last year for the establishment of Taiwan's first popular music industry department. STUST has currently invested tens of millions in building professional teaching space and equipment; it has even hired several well-known teachers who have taught for years in the industry to foster pop music, performances, stage productions, audio-visual technology, as well as performing arts talent brokers. On December 27, the department held the first achievement presentation in Tainan Cultural & Creative Industrial Park with the title "The Sound of New Generation in the Creative Park," which refers to the development of popular music as the main task of the Cultural and Creative Industrial Park in Tainan" and to foster popular music industry by such educational institutions as STUST’s Department of Popular Music Industry. In the future, the two industries and academia unit will work closely and complement each other and jointly laid the foundation of the pop music industry in Southern Taiwan. The significance of the concert was so great that it attracted enthusiastic participation of many people and parents.

The goal of the Department of Pop Music Industry is to foster pop music industry professionals immediately available to the industry. The introduction of teachers working in the industry is greatly emphasized so as to establish links with the industry. Students can therefore receive a complete training in popular music industry to strengthen their skills and expertise and to make a real mechanism that can enable students to join the job market after graduation. The system comes with a number of well-known enterprises in close cooperation with the industry. During the school years, students are regularly allowed to join the intern training in the Cultural and Creative Industrial Park in Tainan, which has signed with STUST a franchise contract for 15 years. They are also allowed to go to Aiken digital music company, Hundred Songs Sound & Stage Lighting Engineering Company, Kuang Yi Lighting and Sound Company, Apple Line Network to conduct workplace training or internship.

The students were high school students in September when they joined the enrollment of the first session after graduating vocational schools around Taiwan. All of them have the talent to be engaged in popular music, either foreground performance or the work behind the scenes. Thanks to the guidance of teachers from the industrial sector as well as students’ diligent efforts, in just a few months they have made progress rapidly and now have almost become equal to professionals in terms of performance, showing that they are ready to be pop rookies. The department will hold achievement performances each semester and release them to the community to show the outcome of the students’ learning. Yi-Feng Wang, General Manager of Tainan Cultural & Creative Industrial Park, said that the park has rehearsal space for cultural and creative professionals and stream audio available for students to use. It is expected next year that the park can enable live house shows and will be offered to students for their internships and field operations. not only for their stage performances but also for lighting and sound and stage design. Master lectures will also be held from time to time, scholars from all sectors of the music will be invited to participate in the activities, and representative from enterprises and industries, such as record companies, stage facilities companies, and agencies, will come to create a forum to activate the chain of music industry in southern Taiwan.

The achievement show included the student's creation or adaptation in their performances. The department also invited part-time teachers-- Golden Melody Awards Winner Sheng-Shian Liu and "The Musical Godmother of Taiwan" Su-Wen Shai—to perform with students on the stage. In addition, Prof. Nan-Chu Li, Music Consultant of the creative park also sang a French chanson suite; guest performances were given by STUST Rock Music Club. Chairperson Chi-Guang Chen said, "Band instructor Prof. Chi-Min Hsu, who is a well-known music director, believes that these students' professional level has been pretty good." In the show, all the wonderful professional performaces won repeated praises from the audience, who is now looking forward to many more exciting shows to enrich the local culture and popular music in Tainan.
