“Distributed Solar Powered Environment Detection Ball," the second place winner of the System Integration and Implementation Category, was completed under the direction of Prof. Rei-Tang Chen from the Department of Optical Engineering. Hao-Yu Chuang, Chi- Che Chen, and Chuang Jih Lai worked closely together in integrating various sensors of gases, pH rate, and other dangerous elements into their work to achieve an all-in-one pollutant source detection. With the advantage of moderate size and volume, their work can be set in the sewers and other easily contaminated or high risk zones near the riverbank with gas surrounding. As the monitoring data can be transferred through 3G module, the detection module comes with a wireless transmission system to transmit the results to the phone.

President Chien Tai of STUST said that the school is committed to developing innovative and creative professional design talents. Winning the 2015 Get Fresh Competition by the Ministry of Economic Affairs is the result of the school’s endeavor to encourage science and technology and innovation. Participation in the National Invention Contest, in addition to encourage investment in the creation of our students and teachers, enhance research and development. STUST has been working for many years in building up inter-institution/exchanges and cooperation in the field of resources and results, trying to expand exchanges and benefit people with creativity. It will also help establish cooperation between research institutions and industries.
For example, CO detection and propane detection can be returned every five minutes to the phone. Once there is any abnormal situation happening, working crew can find it immediately as it returns to the scene to view. Similarly, the pH detector can transfer data every five minutes to the phone monitoring the extent of pollution in the ocean or any river. As long as one excessive concentration is found to be rapidly changing, the working crew can immediately launch EPA site inspections.

【Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology won the second place in the “Creative Thinking Category” in the 2015 Get Fresh Competition with their work "Aurora." Team members Li-Siu Chen (left) and Hu-Chung Tsai (right) accepted the prize on behalf of the team.】
The work "Aurora," the second place winner of the Creative Thinking Category, was completed under the direction of Prof. Yi-You Hou from the Department of Electrical Engineering, who led Intelligent Control Engineering Laboratory (ICEL). "Aurora" is based on the concept of “creating light for oneself.” By employing adsorption lampshade, one can change the source of life according to his or her will, not only adding visual effects but also saving the cost. The work was eligible for accreditation and eventually won the second place in the "Creative Thinking Category." The team members said that they have enjoyed every day of their lives, both in time and space, doing all they can do to cherish this extraordinary journey.
