Professor Cheng-wen Wu was approved by the Ministry of Education to be the fifth president of STUST《2022/12/28》

The new president of STUST was approved by the Ministry of Education on December 26. Professor Cheng-wen Wu will serve as the fifth president, with his initial term of office beginning from February 1, 2023 to January 31, 2027. He will lead all the faculty and students forward to a new era.

Professor Cheng-wen Wu is a Distinguished Chair Professor of National Tsing Hua University, and concurrently serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Technical Expert of the Industrial Technology Research Institute. He obtained a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University in 1981. As a result of his further study in the United States, he received a Ph.D. in 1987 from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of California, Santa Barbara. In early 1988, he began to teach in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Tsinghua University, where he later served as the Director of the Computer Center, the Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering, the Dean of the School of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, and the Vice President. He also served as the Director of ITRI's System Chip Technology Center, the Director of Information and Communication Research Institute, and the Vice President of Cheng Kung University.

Professor Wu's research achievements in semiconductor memory testing, diagnosis, and repair have already been applied to by the industry to a number of technologies and to countless industrial IC products, which has further derived more than forty related domestic and foreign patents and won him Outstanding Research Award of the National Science Council, IEEE Fellow, Academic Award of the Ministry of Education, National Lecture Host of the Ministry of Education, Distinguished Chair Professor of Tsinghua University, Electrical Engineering Medal of the Chinese Society of Electrical Engineering, Outstanding Achievement Award of the Fei Tao Fei Honorary Society, Pan Wen-yuan Research Outstanding Award, SEMI Industry Contribution Award, and other honors. In addition, he has been strongly committed to promoting industry-university cooperation. He presided over the first academic project of the Ministry of Economic Affairs in the country, and produced the first million-gate SOC chip in domestic academia. His achievements in various technological transfers have been fruitful, which brought him the Award of Silicon Guide Project, Outstanding Innovation Achievement Award, Ministry of Education Industry-University Cooperation Award, Tsinghua University Outstanding Industry-University Cooperation Award, Ministry of Science and Technology Outstanding Technology Transfer Contribution Award, etc. He used to be the convener of the EDA Alliance in the Advisory Office of the Ministry of Education as well as the convener of the SOC General Alliance. He has also won Tsinghua University's Outstanding Teaching Award twice for his outstanding teaching performance.

Professor Wu was seconded to ITRI from 2007 to 2014, appointed as the Director of the System Chip Technology Center to develop advanced IC chip design and verification technology. He won the 50th Science Achievement Award of the National Science Council and several ITRI Outstanding Research Awards, Achievement Contribution Awards, Challenge Research Awards, etc. In 2010, he integrated the System Chip Technology Center and the Institute of Information and Communication, serving as the Director of the Institute of Information and Communication with a team of nearly 1,000 people. Under his leadership, the Institute of Information Technology continuously produced important technological achievements and won the highest honor of the 3rd National Industrial Innovation Award of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Outstanding Innovation Research Institution Award. He personally won the Fellow of the Science and Technology Management Society of the Republic of China, the TECO Award, etc.

Professor Wu loves sports. He was a national Little League player, serving as a pitcher and shortstop for the ROC Giants Little League Team. In 1971, the 25th Williamsport World Little League Game saw him leading the Taiwanese team to the world championship with a 11:0 shutout. He was awarded a National Independent Sports Medal by the Ministry of Education. After the merger between Tsinghua University and Hsinchu University of Education, he established the first interdisciplinary sports technology research and development center among top universities. He called on teachers with sports and technology related expertise inside and outside the school to form a team to help top domestic players improve their competitive levels, enhance the international competitiveness of the sports industry, and create new interdisciplinary research on sports technology. During the time he served at Chenggong University, Professor Wu was also the executive Director of the 110th National College Games. He integrated the scientific and technological expertise and sports expertise of teachers and students in the school. For the first time, he combined technology with the National College Games, showing a number of sports technology achievements ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.

Professor Wu has forward-looking thinking and a pioneering personality. He believes that in the face of the rapid changes happening in the global situation, our society, and industries, the manufacturing industry, which has been supported by a large number of operators in the past, should gradually transform, and the talent cultivation mechanism of the higher education system must also keep pace with the times, so as to meet industry needs and social expectations. He believes that it is a progressive approach to encourage the connection of resources such as schools, legal entities, and industries in the region and develop on-campus production lines to jointly cultivate talents. Such an approach should be actively promoted.

Professor Wu's qualifications in academic administration and industry research administration are rich and complete, and he has leadership and execution capabilities. He has a deep relationship with the industry, especially in the semiconductor industry, with influence on the formation of the industrial policy of our country. He is an international scholar who has frequent interactions with the international academic community and an insight into the pulse of global industries and societies. He has a multi-dimensional development thinking and attaches great importance to technology and humanities. In the face of declining birth rate in the future, international competition for talents, major humanity issues, his forward-looking thinking, outstanding leadership, strong ambition, and enthusiasm, Professor Wu will lead STUST to a new era and make STUST a new model of high-quality private universities in Taiwan.
